There were many leagues and players that came before the game we know today and this site is a celebration of their achievements that have allowed us to enjoy the great game of football as we know it today. The game of modern American football owes it roots in large part to the game of rugby which enjoyed modest popularity in America. Walter Camp who is widely recognized as the father of modern American football based his game largely on the tenets of Rugby and its general rules of play which were modified with several important changes. Camp introduced the line of scrimmage and the down and distance rules that the modern game is based off of. Other early coaches and innovators include Amos Stagg, Pop Warner and Knute Rockne. These men took Camps modifications and made even greater changes to them leading us one step closer to the modern era. The forward pass was probably the single biggest innovation. The ability to pass beyond the line of scrimmage changed completely the strategy and original style of the game that Camp had largely created. By the first half of the 1900s the game was becoming increasingly popular with major colleges and universities adopting teams and agreeing to play one another on a regular basis which led to many of the modern day rivalries we enjoy.
